Sanar Institute
What is it?
Sanar Institute specializes in service provision for survivors of human trafficking, intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and individuals marginalized based on their identification on the LGBTQIA spectrum. The Sanar Institute’s services include trauma-specific psychotherapy; expressive arts and music therapy; yoga and mindfulness practice; case advocacy, and other evidence-based modalities. The Sanar Institute provides training and education to key stakeholders on trauma-informed aftercare to ensure all survivors have access to critical healing support.

Trauma-specific therapy
Sanar offers long-term therapeutic support that allow survivors to reduce trauma-related symptoms and process trauma. Survivors can work with staff and clinicians to create individualized treatment plans.
- Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR)
- Evidence-based integrative psychotherapy treatment
- Help overcome symptoms and emotional distress resulting from traumatic life
- Procedure allowing the memory of trauma to be reprocessed to reduce symptoms of PTSD and/or other disorders
- Sanar offers individual Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT) sessions for children and adolescents struggling with impacts of violence
- Evidence-based treatment approach for children and adolescents
- Reduce emotional and behavioral responses to traumatic events like child sexual abuse, domestic violence, and traumatic loss
- Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT)
- Using an emotional connection with an animal to meet individualized therapy goals

- Mindfulness-based interventions teach survivors skills that can help them focus their attention on their experience in a nonjudgmental or accepting way
- Allows survivors to redirect anxious or negative thoughts and reconnect with the present
- Can reduce trauma symptoms like anxiety, dissociation, and depression
- Aromatherapy
- Encourages healing by providing an atmosphere for relaxation, breathing, and sensory engagement through the use of essential oils
- Reduces anxiety and stress-related symptoms
- Expressive arts
- Use of artistic outlets to process trauma, build self-esteem, and engage in creative exploration
- Sanar uses visual art, dance, theater, photography, mixed media, poetry, and music
